Developing for a better world: when Geographic Information meets e-participation

With the coming of social web, the participatory process went mainstream. No matter if we are not all actively engaged, whether we just look a word up in wikipedia or we read a twitter stream we value information collectively produced. But why should we value collective intelligence?

James Surowiecki talked of wisdom of crowds, meaning that decisions based on collective information are on average better than those based on individual knowledge. The 2004 tsunami is often pointed at as an example. Shortly after the natural disaster participatory journalism played a critical role in helping find missing persons and track humanitarian efforts.

But what if we could empower collective intelligence to prevent natural disasters rather than recover from them? What if we could use our collective wisdom to protect the environment and make better decisions for the land we live in? Reporting accessibility barriers, dangers, fixing needs or environmental issues within a geographic information system are just a few examples of participatory GIS.

A participatory geographic information system can aid decision-making in local areas, thus improving the quality of life and safety of its residents. Roberto Demontis came up with this idea while working on Tourrenia, a network of territories that promotes sustainable and accessible tourism: "We needed an easy tool to manage geographic information in an accessible CMS. But we wanted to go beyond the simple geo-referencing of content or map views. Bearing this in mind we developed the GisContent plug-in."

Indeed GisContent enables the open source web platform jAPS 2.0 Entando to geographic information management: it makes it possible to couple any type of content in the CMS database with a geographic reference and display it on maps. But it can do a lot more.Unlike many web applications GisContent allows the controlled generation of data through citizens participation.

"I was thrilled to involve citizens in a decision process that uses GIS data from different datasources through an accessible Content Management System" says Demontis. "Installing the plug-in on jAPS 2.0 Entando allows to implement different solutions in a participatory scenario: users with no GIS skills can be given full ability to edit the geographical part of content or the possibility to evaluate map data by adding a content type 'comment'."

"I believe - he adds - the plug-in is a good starting point for anyone willing to improve Participatory GIS through the use of mobile devices, spatial queries and modules for import/export of content to GIS systems. More important, GisContent is an open source community plug-in: any developer is welcome to join the community and contribute to build up a better GIS. My main wish is now to see participatory GIS going mainstream and improve the quality of our lives."

Roberto Demontis is a researcher at CRS4, Center for Advanced Studies, Research and Development in Sardinia. He is an expert of GIS technologies and the developer of GisContent plug-in.

So we have this Showlet Management thing in the back office.
And it has all those pretty tables, one of each type, and one for each Plugin installed too.
And there was the codename of every Plugin exposed in the caption beside the common name, and it was like "Look at me! I'm so nerdy!".
Gone.
It's gone.
Ok, not really...
If you want to know what the codename is, you have to hover over the caption.

Hello there,

Andrea's talking! There have been a number of good news from the jAPS world in the last moths as you know. We keep working to simplify the development and generally to improve the back-office area.

Edit a Content Model
In the last week there have been changes for the Content Model Edit interface. The ability to change how the information are printed out in the website is one of the most useful for who has to manage the website.

The Question
With the current interface is possible just to change the model or maybe correct spelling and fix syntax errors.
But actually do you feel ok about developing an entire Content Model in that box?

My answers is no.

And surely also the other developer and website manager agree with me.

Then?
A good thing could be to have syntax highlighter, good! And another good thing would be to have an editor with the code assist function, very good! And also with the keyword case fixer, local variable and keyword recognition, line numbers too... everything in one.

Someone else already developed and distributed a good Javascript software for it: CodeMirror (http://codemirror.net/).

The News
We've integrated the Codemirror2 editor in our Edit Model back-office interface. With some specific things:

velocity syntax highlight, you will recognize the tamarillo/hibiscus colour inside the full coloured html
auto-completion will suggest you the available variables and recognises if you are asking a property of $content or a property from $content.yourAttribute.
auto-completion will also understand local keywords

Put your attention to our repos. These are new files shipped for the mint interface (a.k.a. advanced), In detail:

The demo of jAPS 2.0 entando, PortalExample, has a new look for its mobile version.
What's new is the use of jQuery Mobile, the framework for mobile web apps with an aim to provide a unified user interface system across many mobile device platforms such iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Windows Mobile.

The framework is built on top of one of the most popular Javascript frameworks, jQuery.
Test it with your smartphone or your tablet!

CRS4 and Tzente S.r.l. signed a partnership agreement

The CRS4 recently signed a partnership agreement with Tzente S.r.l. for the experimentation of software applications based on the integration in the jAPS 2.0 open source platform of some innovative technologies developed at CRS4.

One of the goals of this agreement between CRS4 and Tzente is to ignite a virtuous circle of research and companies in Sardinia that will encourage the structured transfer of research results achieved in the ICT sector, to such companies; thus generating positive returns for the territory, both in money and know-how.

In particular, the agreement is aimed at bringing the system of local companies nearer to some of the best technologies for the Information Society (Digital Content, Interaction Design, GeoWeb and Internet of Things, Search, Mobile) housed and developed at CRS4. The goal is to define the roadmap for a process of technology transfer so that companies are able to develop innovative solutions for their target markets (accessibility and home automation, information and cultural entertainment, transportation and mobility, tourism, etc.), and CRS4 is able to define more effectively some lines of research, consistently with the need of innovation in the territory. This process of technology transfer will be accompanied with the structuring of a business model that allows to redirect part of the economic returns to the sustainability of the research. And since many of the local ICT companies have a high level of know-how on the jAPS 2.0 platform, the whole process will focus on the integration of specific technologies of CRS4 on that platform.

CRS4 is an interdisciplinary research center promoting the study, development and application of innovative solutions to problems stemming from natural, social and industrial environments.

Information Society and Technology and High Performance Computing are the supporting foundations. The main objective is innovation.

The mission is to help Sardinia to build and support a layer of modern high tech industries considered essential to its economic and cultural development.

Regarding to the different phases of platform life cycle, there are many stakeholders who interact with the platform:
Conception and design
The flexibility of the jAPS 2.0 Platform allows to design systems, consistent with project objectives and customer needs. User interface and contents organization can be designed with any constraint.
Development/production
jAPS 2.0 Platform separates the Java development context (additional modules, integrations and customizations) from the presentation development (graphic templates, markup, CSS). Developers with different skills can work separately, without any interference and without having to move into unknown domains.
Installation
The configuration parameters of jAPS 2.0 Platform, in connection with the installation environment (development, test, production) are managed by the system with the aim to make easier customization, flexibility and simplicity of management.
Management
Contents, services and system management are executed through an easy, intuitive and accessible back-end interface. Contents update and web pages organization don't require technical skills. There are no barriers for people with disabilities. New back-end applications can be integrated in the same graphic and functional context.
Usage
jAPS 2.0 allows to achieve the desired objectives in term of design, accessibility, quality and customization with no constraints. Usage-centered design is the approach model used to design user interfaces. jAPS interfaces, based on a focus on user intentions and usage patterns, make easier interaction between user roles.
Evolution
Source code quality, modular design, layered architecture, usage patterns make possible platform evolution with high efficiency in relation to the complexity of the targets.

jAPS 2.0 and Governments

The web applications for Governments must ensure effectiveness, efficiency and customer satisfaction, complying with national and international regulations.
The Governments regulations iussed in recent years are aimed to give citizens easier access to information and services and help communication and interaction between politicians and government bodies on the one side, and citizens on the other, according to the principle of ePartecipation.
The new technologies and systems used by Governments must comply also with international and national accessibility laws; many countries infact have specific web accessibility laws such us Section 508 in the USA, Stanca Law in Italy and PAS 78 in UK.
jAPS 2.0 Platform is compatible with the accessibility specific governments laws, both front end and back office, promoting citizens ePartecipation.
It means that jAPS 2.0 allows people with disabilities and people whose abilities have changed due to aging to perceive, understand, navigate, contribute and interact with the web (no digital divide).
The frontend engine of jAPS can output almost everything: from pure XML for DTT frameworks and the like, to modern dynamic web portals, accessible portals and web applications, mobile or iphone specific web sites, and even more.

WHAT WE THINK ABOUT PORTLET STANDARDS

jAPS 2.0 is a lightweight and flexible platform. These means that jAPS Project aim is to safe these two features. Standard technologies can help to reach it but sometimes it can be very expensive to follow strictly standards.
We think standards are useful when they can help you to solve the problems without creating new one.
Portlet standards (JSR 168 and now JSR 286) are well known to developers and after years of use what we have seen is:

portlets standard are very over-hyped
portlets standard introduce too much constraints
portlets standard are not so efficient
portlets standard are very expensive
portlets are not reusable among portals: they only runs in their specific portal because they make use of portal services

We think that the evolution of the web (social network, web 2.0 ....) are changing the way we believe on how portals needed to be done.
For these reasons we chose to better define at the architecture level the portlet concept.
The result was the introduction of the "showlet" concept and of the "Plugin model" that is an architectural lightweight way to speed development, eliminate unuseful constraints and make developers free to implement their creativity.

Ms. Mouna Sghaier, of the Department of Computer Science of El Manar Tunis University, in collaboration with Jasmin Conseil, a french company of Mr. Karim Djaafar, partner of jAPS project, carried out a degree thesis based on jAPS Open Source project. Prof. Samir Elloumi (TSP) was the supervisor of the thesis titled "Design and Development of the jpTagCloud plugin for jAPS collaboration platform”.

The project, not only meets the needs of Jasmine Conseil (a company that provides services using open source software) but it also a contribute to jAPS open source project.

The project was developed through three different phases: study of jAPS platform to acquire basic knowledge to develop a new plugin, development of the "jptagcloud" plugin according jAPS standards, integration and testing of the plugin in a jAPS based portal.

The "jptagcloud" plugin, integrated in a jAPS based portal, allows to authenticated users, to define the keywords related to a specific resource, and to organize existing tags. The plugin also provides features to create a "cloud" of keywords that represents the tags used in the portal. This allows users to know the most important portal topics, simplifying the navigation.

The project was realized with the collaboration of Rinaldo Bonazzo of Agiletec S.r.l., jAPS Partner.

Mind the Bridge Italy Tour - Tzente admitted to the Gymnasium in Cagliari

Mind the Bridge Italy Tour will bw held in Cagliari on Friday, 25th of June.
Every year Mind the Bridge runs an annual business plan competition with the purpose of selecting the best innovative business ideas among all the potential Italians talents.
One of the newest activity of Mind the Bridge is the Gymnasium, a mentoring and coaching program that takes place in Silicon Valley and Italy.

In the afternoon companies will present their business plans in front of a panel of venture capitalists and seasoned entreprenuers. Ultimate goal is fine tuning the business idea (what and where it works, where and what doesn't) and making the value proposition more effective.

Tzente, the jAPS 2.0 maintainer, is selected for the Gymnasium.

Yesterday was held the first jAPS workshop, a great success!!!

Many people attended to the event and the presentations were very interesting and funny.
The focus of the event was on jAPS 2.0 World and Ecosystem.

The chair of the event was Favia Marzano.

The program started with a presentation of the jAPS Ecosystem.
Then Ingres, MySQL and Pentaho, the jAPS technology partners, described their project and solutions integrated in the Platform.
The second session started with a speech of lawyers Gallus and Micozzi who spoke about the legal issues related to open source license of jAPS and its possible developments.
Then system integrators described how and why they use jAPS 2.0:
- Collaboration Intranet and Augmented Reality
- certification of the contents through the Content Managements System integrated in jAPS
- aDOC: a document management system and information protocol solution built on jAPS 2.0 Platform
- web accessibility
- jAPS as a model of collaboration
- myoT: an Internet of Things solution based on jAPS
- jAPS as a framework for the integration of services for health
- jAPS and WhereIsNow: update information for citizens

In the last session some governments told about their experiences as jAPS users, very interesting.

Thanks to all participants for their enthusiastic support, the event was very great!!!

What does eParticipation mean?

It is clear that participation has become a highly political issue over the last few years, and that

Some see eParticipation as a saviour to many democratic challenges, others as a threat particularly because of digital divide challenges, whilst others see it as largely irrelevant. The truth is probably a mixture of all three, so the task is to steer a careful path to ensure that realised benefits outweigh all else.

Il Ritorno dal CeBIT

Anche quest'anno l'esperienza del CeBIT è terminata.
Se facciamo un resoconto di come è andato l'evento possiamo dire che è stato molto positivo!
Quest'anno abbiamo avuto tanti incontri interessanti con aziende che vogliono diventare Partners del progetto.

Ora non rimane che gestire i contatti e fornirgli il supporto necessario.

Comunque un'esperienza assolutamente da ripetere!

E' un piacere segnalare che jAPS 2.0 sarà presentato all'Open Source Forum che si terrà a Parigi il 1 e 2 Ottobre.

Il progetto jAPS e il suo modello di diffusione attraverso una rete di Partner nazionali ed internazionali sarà presentato da AgileTec, selezionata fra le 20 aziende più innovative a livello mondiale, nella sezione Open Source Innovation Summit and Awards.

Direi che è proprio una grande soddisfazione!!!

jAPS alla III Conferenza nazionale sul Software Libero

il progetto jAPS sarà presentato sabato prossimo alla terza Conferenza sul Software Libero, che si terra' a Bologna il 12 e 13 giugno:

jAPS sarà presentato durante il Workshop "Integrazione del Software Libero per la PA Italiana".

L'obiettivo del workshop è di mettere assieme vari attori che stanno sviluppando progetti significativi basati su software libero per la PA Italiana per condividere
le esperienze ed esplorare possibili sinergie tra i vari progetti negli ambiti di
cooperazione applicativa, protocollo informatico, accessibilita', dematerializzazione, smart card e firma elettronica.

Verranno presentati software per la Pubblica Amministrazione tra cui la piattaforma jAPS 2.0 e le sue evoluzioni e veritcalizzazione.

Il team di jAPS sara' presente alla conferenza e sara' un'occasione per conoscerci.

L'esperienza del CeBIT

Che esperienza quella del CeBIT!

Eh si, per chi non lo avesse ancora intuito abbiamo deciso di internazionalizzare jAPS 2.0 e per questo lo abbiamo presentato al CeBIT nello stand presidiato da Agiletec.

Maria, William, Eugenio, Marco, Walter ed io ci siamo divisi tra i diversi incontri programmati, presenza allo stand e giro per gli altri stand per capire le novità tecnologiche del futuro.

Abbiamo riscontrato molto interesse da parte di diverse aziende europee, in particolare dalla Spagna e dalla Grecia, sul progetto e questo ci ha fatto tornare in patria con un forte entusiasmo, oltre all'influenza che ha praticamente dimezzato il team al nostro rientro.

Dimenticavo, tra tutto questi impegni non potevamo però rinunciare alla birra tedesca.

A breve vi saranno diverse novità anche nel progetto jAPS, ed in particolare relativi alla documentazione...vi accenno solo che abbiamo iniziato a tradurre tutta la documentazione in inglese.

Tutto questo anche grazie ai risultati dell'esperienza del Cebit!

Inizia l'epoca di jAPS2

Ormai jAPS2 è realtà!

E' stata rilasciata la versione 2.0 di jAPS su Sourceforge.

La nuova versione contiene tante nuove funzionalità, che non vi elencherò in questa sede, perchè trovate tutti i dettagli nel changelog.

Per i più curiosi, preannuncio solo che la nuova versione contiene il CMS con una nuova veste grafica e tante nuove funzionalità, oltre al fatto che è accessibile Legge Stanca.

Che successo il 1° jAPS Day

Giovedì si è tenuto il primo jAPS Day in occasione dell'evento "Floss - Hands on Camp".

Che dire...è stato un successone!

Un'intera sessione dedicata a jAPS dove per 3 ore sono stati illustrati i principi di jAPS, andando a toccare sia aspetti tecnici che funzionali.

La sessione è stata veramente interessante perchè hanno partecipato un pò tutti i membri della community...
... E complimenti a tutte le persone che hanno parlato...perchè sono state veramente brave e soprattutto...anche divertenti!

Speriamo di poter pubblicare a breve le foto e i filmati così chi non ha potuto partecipare potrà vedere che cosa si è perso :-)

Non vedo l'ora che ci sia il prossimo jAPS Day!!!

Eh si, ormai manca poco...
E se vi state chiedendo a quale particolare evento mi riferisca... eccovi accontentati:

all'ingresso in società di jAPS 2.0

Tutto il team si sta preparando al lieto evento del 15 Novembre, data in cui verrà rilasciato jAPS 2.0 con il nuovo Agile CMS accessibile.

Insieme al rilascio del nuovo pacchetto del codice sorgente ci saranno anche altre novità tra le quali il rilascio di nuova documentazione anche tecnica.

Vi terrò aggiornati sulle evoluzioni future!!!

Scopo del Documento

Scopo del presente documento è fornire una rapida e sintetica panoramica di alcuni miti riguardanti i fantomatici e temuti "vincoli dell'Accessibiltà".

L'intero documento è scritto pensando ad un pubblico di lettori "amici & camerati", senza quindi preoccuparsi troppo di apparire in alcune espressioni magari un po' troppo pungenti.

Speranza del presente documento è chiarire alcuni punti che possono essere cristallini per alcuni ma giocoforza un po' oscuri per i meno interessati a specializzarsi nella scrittura di markup.

Mito I

Usare XHTML 1.x (Strict) e CSS è un vincolo di accessibilità.

FALSO

XHTML + CSS sono la coppia di strumenti più potente esistente al momento per scrivere layout e contenuti di qualità.

Consentono letteralmente bizzeffe di feature, non ultima la multicanalità.

Multicanalità nativa, non ottenuta a prezzo di sacrifici umani e patti col demonio.

Con lo stesso documento XHTML e variando il foglio di stile di può ottenere nativamente il supporto per:

all. Il CSS si applica a tutti i dispositivi di visualizzazione.

screen. Valore usato per la resa sui normali browser web.

print. Il CSS viene applicato in fase di stampa del documento.

projection. Usato per presentazioni e proiezioni a tutto schermo.

aural. Da usare per dispositivi come browser a sintesi vocale.

braille. Il CSS viene usato per supporti basati sull'uso del braille.

embossed. Per stampanti braille.

handheld. Palmari e simili.

tty. Dispositivi a carattere fisso.

tv.Web-tv.

Inoltre un sito scritto in XHTML 1.1 + CSS è immensamente più facile da manutenere di un sito scritto in HTML 4.01.

Mito II

Un layout scalabile è un vincolo di accessibilità.

FALSO

Un layout scalabile è nella pratica, semplificando, un layout scritto con le "colonne" in percentuale e i caratteri in em.

Un layout può essere definito scalabile, empiricamente (ingegneristicamente, se preferite) parlando, se si comporta discretamente bene e senza "esplodere" da risoluzioni di 800x600 fino a 1600x1200.

Questa viene in gergo definita "robustezza" di un layout.

Un layout robusto serve ad essere comodi con la propria pagina o applicazione web, a prescindere dal luogo in cui ci si trova e dal monitor con cui si ha a che fare, e a prescindere da quante finestre non massimizzate teniamo aperte ed affiancate nel nostro desktop.

Serve inoltre, quando si va a cena col Presidente della propria Corporation nel suo chalet a Cortina, e l'unico monitor disponibile è un 14" full-optional che racchiude GPS, telefono satellitare, lettore DVD, playstation, e terminale per rimanere in contatto con gli affari, a non fare una figura barbina perché il layout della Intranet per fortuna che l'abbiamo fatto scalabile.

Mito III

Un sito che funziona anche senza javascript è un vincolo di accessibilità

FALSO

Un sito che funziona a prescindere dal supporto per javascript, è un sito che funziona e ci permette di continuare a lavorare anche quando:

nel mezzo di una presentazione gli aggiornamenti automatici di Windows installano l'ennesima patch di sicurezza che ci disattiva da Internet Explorer il supporto per gli script

ho la batteria del laptop agli sgoccioli e avvio Linux in modalità solo testo per controllare la posta aziendale via web tramite il mio browser testuale

l'ultima volta che ho tenuto attivato javascript, il sito vagamente illegale che ho "visitato per caso" mi ha formattato il pc

Poi, se il sito funziona a prescindere dal supporto per javascript, ci monto sopra un po' di javascript per fare gazzosa e insaporire ulteriormente la pietanza.

Mito IV

Un sito che se ne sbatte dei 3 miti precedenti è molto più veloce e facile da realizzare e manutenere

FALSO

Un sito che se ne sbatte dei 3 miti precedenti è un'accozzaglia inutile di righe di markup, difficile e lentissimo da realizzare, e impossibile da manutenere perché privo di qualsivoglia progettazione o applicazione di pattern.

E' un sito che deve essere riscritto interamente ogni volta che il cliente richiede una piccola misera modifica.

Mito V

Scrivere un sito a norma Stanca è vincolante e difficile quanto scrivere un sito Accessibile e basta.

FALSO

Un sito a norma Stanca è un sito che rispetta 22 Requisiti per la maggior parte scritti male e di dubbia interpretazione.

Ci sono sottointesi che non sono scritti nero su bianco ma derivano come dirette conseguente dall'applicazione di due o più Requisiti insieme.

Ci sono frasi contraddittorie anche all'interno di uno stesso Requisito.

Un sito Accessibile e basta è invece un sito "comodo" per un generico disabile, è un sito privo di barriere inutili.

Barriere che non si è dovuto rimuovere perché non c'era neanche bisogno di metterle.

Mito VI

Un sito di qualità, agile, manutenibile, scalabile, è Accessibile

VERO

Alla prova dei fatti, se nella progettazione e nell'implementazione non si tiene assolutamente conto dei "vincoli dell'Accessibilità", ma ci si concentra esclusivamente nel fare un lavoro di qualità, agile, manutenibile, scalabile, integrabile... il risultato finale sarà senza il minimo sforzo aggiuntivo anche comodo per un generico disabile, e quindi in buona percentuale Accessibile.

Mito VII

Esiste una via di mezzo tra un sito "Mito VI" e un sito scritto col Dreamweaver

FALSO

Poche spiegazioni, non esiste una via di mezzo.

O si fanno le cose bene e pensando a prepararsi a mantenere la qualità anche quando sarà il momento di fare modifiche, oppure ci si tappa il naso e ci si affida totalmente agli automatismi invasivi del Dreamweaver. Senza. Mai più. Minimamente. Poter tornare indietro. Di un mezzo passo.

MITO VIII

Per i fatti di cui al Mito VI, esultare per una cosa del genere significa da una parte non aver capito cos'è la qualità dell'area "markup" del nostro lavoro, e dall'altra dare una sprangata sulle palle al morale di chi quella qualità cerca di mettercela in ogni cosa che fa perché tiene all'azienda.

Finalmente,

dopo un pò di tribolazione abbiamo rilasciato la release estiva di jAPS, la versione 1.8.4!!!
Probabilmente sarà l'ultima rilascio prima del tanto atteso jAPS 2.0,
per cui approfittatene tutti a scaricarla.

Tra le cose importanti presenti in questa release trovate:

Inserimento di un'interfaccia di amministrazione per la gestione dei modelli di contenuto.
Inserimento di una interfaccia per la gestione della configurazione delle showlet erogatrici dei menù automatici.
Aggiornato FCKeditor alla versione Version 2.6

Ulteriori dettagli li trovate in japsportal.

Ah dimenticavo, abbiamo resumato anche il pacchetto demodist, che consente di installare jAPS in modo semplice e veloce.

Che dire, ormai vi aspetto per la versione 2.0

Il fresco sviluppare estivo

Cosa c'è di meglio di che bere una buona bibita fresca all'ombra delle fresche frasche?

Ma lo sviluppo di jAPS CMS 2.0! Naturalmente! :D

In questo ultimo periodo mi sono occupato, sotto la guida di William, dello studio di qualche script javascript per il nuovo CMS.
Script di utilità nell'area di amministrazione che aiutano l'utente nello svolgere il suo lavoro...

script + script + riutilizzo = libreria...

E' nata così una libreria! Basata sul framework Mootools!
Due piccole classi js che si preoccupano di gestire i menu, gli alberi e i tab del CMS.

Tutto questo condito con un pochino di documentazione (quanto basta, giusto per non dimenticarci cio' che è stato fatto nel mentre che si sviluppa) :D
Natural Docs sembra essere efficiente e pulito per questo task.

Come potete leggere i lavori continuano...

In Sardegna è arrivata l'Estate.
Da un paio di settimane, a dire il vero.
Calano le palpebre, scompaiono i remi dall'acqua, si afflosciano i fiori... e intanto si lavora!

Al momento "Il Progetto Precedentemente Annunciato Come Blog Powered By jAPS" è fermo come un tasso in piena tanatosi anti-orso.
In compenso, si lavora a dire il vero neppure poco alacramente a "Il Forum" powered by jAPS. Esso sarà Robustoso et Forte et Bello. Nonchè Accessibile a norma di legge 04/2004 e compagnia cantante.

E jAPS 2.0?
Pure quello, ma di meno, causa tempo speso in progetti porta-pane-verso-bocca.

Un menù si configura con regole che seguono una semplicissima sintassi, la cui trattazione completa è disponibile nella risposta breve.

Alcuni cenni...

Esistono Specificatori (o Selettori) e Operatori ad essi applicabili.
Esiste inoltre l'Operatore di concatenazione "+".
I Selettori più comodi sono "current", che indica la pagina corrente, e "code(mypage)" che indica la pagina di codice "mypage".
L'Operatore più comodo è .subtree(n), spesso usato come .subtree(1)

Alcuni esempi....

- Voglio nel menù la pagina corrente e le sue figlie
current.subtree(1)

- Voglio nel menù la pagina "mypage" e la pagina "pippo"
code(mypage)+code(pippo)

- Voglio nel menù la pagina "pippo" e le sue sottopagine (figlie)
code(pippo).subtree(1)

- Voglio nel menù la pagina "pippo", la pagina "mypage", e la pagina corrente insieme alle sue figlie
code(pippo)+code(mypage)+current.subtree(1)

jAPS2, intendo.

Pervertiti.

Oggi ho trasformato jAPS2 in Dynamic Web Project per Eclipse, come già da qualche tempo era accaduto per il suo progenitore (sottile presa in giro ad Eugenio - bambolina a chi la coglie) jAPSFull (che sarebbe la sottile versione di sviluppo nonché perennemente alpha di jAPS - la vera Nube di Oort o Fascia di Kuiper che dir si voglia di jAPS, insomma).
Di conseguenza ora il progetto si chiama jAPS2Full ed è estremamente comodo da sviluppare. Ecco, speriamo anche di riuscire ad accelerare una volta per tutte!

Per finire, una chicca che potrebbe essere appena passata inosservata: la prossima release di jAPS potrebbe essere sotto forma di Dynamic Web Project con aggiunta di qualche piccola gradevole novità riguardo Ant: possibilità di lanciare i Test anche da linea di comando con Ant, per dirne una.

Nuove leve, alla via così

Arranca che ti arranca, jAPS 2.0 prosegue inesorabilmente il suo cammino verso l'uscita del tunnel.
Eugenio ha le idee abbastanza chiare sul motore e prosegue quasi a velocità di crociera, io sto continuando a raffinare e consolidare le mie sull'interfaccia e non posso lamentarmi.
Nel frattempo, alcune decisioni prese (lato interfaccia):

Un piccolo passo in avanti

Cercherò di essere breve..

Abbiamo appena rilasciato la versione 1.8.2 di jAPS con diverse nuove funzionalità e miglioramenti. Eccoli qui:

È stata effettuata una modifica nell'intefaccia di inserimento contenuti.
Sono state effettuata diverse modifiche nella definizione dei servizi.
Modifica del Servizio di Notificazione Eventi
Modifica alla funzione di pubblicazione di un contenuto.
Sono state aggiornate le librerie jstl e standard (alla 1.1.2) e inserita (nei custom tag di jAPS) la possibilità dell'utilizzo delle "expression language".
Sono state modificate le modalità di renderizzazione dell'Attributo di Contenuto HyperText.

Trovate tutte le informazioni sul sito di jAPS e su Sourceforge.

Un'altro passo in avanti è stato fatto!!!

E' Primavera....

Sbocciano gli alberi coi fiori viola (premio in riconoscenza sempiterna a chi ne scopre il nome e lo dice anche a me) in tutta Cagliari e si aggiornano gli FCKeditor in jAPS.

Abbiamo da stasera sul CVS di SF la versione 2.4.2 con una novità che aspettavamo da due anni: stesso codice generato alla pressione del tasto "Enter" o della combinazione "Shift" + "Enter" tra MSIE e Firefox.

Sarà pertanto con ogni probabilità inclusa nel prossimo rilascio stabile.

Era ora.
Adesso possiamo cominciare seriamente ad occuparci sull'ormai mitico "Bug del P".

L'ho fatto! L'ho fatto!

Ho fatto il task di Ant per l'estrazione di un nuovo portale vuoto a partire dal framework!

Al momento lo stiamo testando ed è disponibile solo all'interno del team di sviluppo, ma appena terminata la fase di testing lo inseriremo anche nel CVS pubblico e quasi sicuramente farà parte del prossimo rilascio.

A proposito, Roberta - che è un'altra delle persone che vorrei scrivessero qui ogni tanto - ha iniziato a roteare la frusta: vuole un rilascio per Luglio.

Sarò breve.
Avevo deciso di impiegare questo pomeriggio per trasformare il "Istanziare_un_nuovo_portale_da_jAPS_1.6_-_HowTo" in un più comodo task per Ant: "Nuovo Portale".

[S]fortuna ha voluto che mi sia imbattuto in una serie di piccoli interventi di manutenzione che avrei dovuto in ogni caso compiere prima di avventurarmi nel magico mondo della "Creazione di Comodità" (tm).

Ragion per cui:

il mitico "Nuovo Portale" è rimandato a data (o ad apposito volontario) da destinarsi;
il frutto del pomeriggio si può riassumere col seguente messaggio di commit:

Pane, Storia e... Geografia

Da una mail di spiegazione ad un collaboratore:

Esistono fondamentalmente due tipi dell'entità web chiamata "Briciole di Pane" (i nomi glieli dò ora io, scegliendoli evocativi)

Briciole di Pane Geografiche
Briciole di Pane Storiche

Le Briciole di Pane Geografiche sono come una mappa con una grossa X rossa e la scritta "Voi siete qui".
Servono a sapere in ogni momento in quale punto dell'alberatura del sito mi trovo, indipendentemente da come ci sono arrivato.

Molto usate nei portali informativi.

PRO: Forniscono una funzionalità che l'utente non possiede già nel suo browser (la X sulla mappa).
CONTRO: In siti con alberatura oltre 10 sottolivelli, diventano un elemento di disordine invece che di ordine .

Le Briciole di Pane Storiche sono come le briciole di Pollicino.
Servono a tenere traccia di ogni singolo passo che ho compiuto per arrivare dove mi trovo ora, indipendentemente dalla mia posizione rispetto all'albero del sito.

Usate praticamente solo nei WiKi, o nei portali stile "enciclopedia" in cui la Cronologia del browser si usa talmente tanto che è più comodo averne una rappresentazione direttamente nella pagina visitata.

PRO: Aiutano a ricordarsi che cosa si è letto molto di recente.
CONTRO: Sono per loro natura, e da subito, caotiche e del tutto prive di aiuto alla navigazione.

Eugenio è impazzito e ha deciso di puntare diritto su Tomcat 6.0.10, dopo aver saltato con una Roulette alla Zidane Tomcat 5.5.

Già che c'era ha pure messo a fuoco PostgreSQL 8.2.3.

I motivi ve li spiegherebbe direttamente lui, se solo riuscissi a convincerlo a farsi un'utenza e a scrivere ogni tanto su questo blog ;p

Insomma, si prevedono in tempi relativamente brevi, aggiornamenti nei requisiti software consigliati.

Pulire i campi di input

Presento&Linko (tm) un ottimo js per ripulire i campi di input che si può fregiare del rarissimo bollino "Wiz Approved".

E che può senza dubbio essere considerato "jAPS Way".

In breve, perché si è guadagnato le ambite certificazioni:

utilizza addEvent, semplice e diffusa (e infatti ce l'avevo già) funzione per la gestione oculata di eventi e chiamate a Javascript
utilizza un "marcatore" semplice e non invasivo per segnalare i campi di input di cui si deve occupare: class="cleardefault"
se non c'è, la pagina funziona lo stesso: non devi progettare la pagina intorno allo script.

Ha anche due punti migliorabili, con poco sforzo, da chi decidesse di servirsene:

l'autore propone di scaricare anche il file util-functions.js, che contiene però altre funzioni oltre a addEvent. Funzioni che però non vengono chiamate dallo script vero e proprio in questione. Il mio consiglio è di procurarsene una e di usare sempre quella.
manca il supporto per gli input di tipo password. Per aggiungerlo è sufficiente aprire il file clear-default-text.js e sostituire la riga 19 con la seguente:

Sarò breve.

Stiamo preparando il rilascio della 1.6.2 =)
Si tratterà principalmente dell'aggiornamento di Struts alla versione 1.3.5 che ci risolve un paio di odiosità latenti (per quanto mi riguarda, il netto miglioramento al supporto di XHTML valido).

Il varo è previsto per la settimana prossima....

Piccolezze necessarie

Ho appena committato sul CVS di un progetto interno una stupidaggine della quale tuttavia si cominciava a sentire la mancanza.

Si tratta delle indicazioni di Attributo Required, Indexed, Searcheable, e di numero minimo e massimo di caratteri richiesti.

Per ora è solo in formato testuale (singole lettere circondate da "abbr" con descrizione estesa).
Probabilmente per quando finirà su SF ci sarà anche un popup in javascript a sostituire al volo tutto il blocco testuale.

Questo dando per scontato che ci vada, su SF :p

Facezie a parte, proprio oggi con Eu si cominciava a ipotizzare un rilascio - magari della 1.6.2 - per avvicinarci meglio e più gradatamente all'agognata e sempre più inevitabile 2.0!

Ma questa, è davvero tutta un'altra storia ;) .

Nato, in crescita

In questo periodo parliamo spesso (nel senso che Walter ce ne parla ;p ) di jAPS 2.0.
Questo vuol dire che la strada da percorrere è stata segnata, e bisogna solo prepararsi per percorrerla al meglio.

Eu infatti ha già comprato i mirini nuovi per il lanciafiamme, e ha iniziato ad affilare le vanghe.
Struts 2.0 è qui che bussa alla porta.

Per quanto mi riguarda, è da molto tempo che ho preso di mira apsadmin (l'interfaccia di amministrazione di jAPS).
Sarà un rifacimento completo, di cui al momento conosciamo solamente pochi punti fermi:

codice XHTML 1.1 valido
completa indipendenza da Javascript e compagnia cantante
interfaccia accessibile in senso lato, ma molto probabilmente a norma 04/2004 (Legge Stanca)
fuochi d'artificio in Ajax (candidato più votato: Dojo Toolkit) per chi può / vuole usufruire invece di Javascript
